Penallta 19 - Risca 23

Match report by Clive James:

After seasons of being second best to Penallta saturday saw the hoodoo being broken with Risca putting in the  performance of the year to run out 23pts.-19 win. The game was switched to the normal pitch as the Dragons were playing on the 4g.

Luke Bowie made his debut in the 2nd row.in place of the unavailable Luke Connolly while prop Jason Rogers was on the bench on permit from Ebbw Vale.

After some early pressure at the set scrums Risca settled and took the game to the homeside with centre McGovern prominent. On 15mins.from a lineout on the halfway flanker Sully surged away on a barnstorming run which took him into the Penallta 22 where he was halted by three defenders before handing on to the supporting Geraint Rowlands who touched down for the opening try. Dowle added the conversion.

Penallta from the kick off tried everything to get back in the game but could not break down the stubborn defence of the visitors. It was not until the 25th.minute that they had their first meaningful attack and eventually centre Dan Moseley found a gap and he made the line for a converted try to level things up.

Back came Risca with slick handling amongst the backs and driving mauls which the homeside couldn't cope with.Penallta were getting frustrated at not being able to dominate and gave away a penalty.Full back Dowle put over the kick and half time came with Risca leading 10pts.-7.

Within minutes of the restart Penallta were gifted a converted try when a wayward pass was gratefully taken by the speedy wing Gareth Edwards.putting them back in front.

This set back only focused Risca more and they stuck to the game plan and tore back into the Pitmen.Wing Ryan Dallimore then took a pass tight to the touchline and ran in from 40metres to touch down near the posts for Dowle to add the extras. The lead was regained 17pts.-14.It was then extended when Dowle landed a long range penalty.

The visitors made a number of changes with Todd James,Owain Cooper and Jason Rogers coming on in the forwards and Rhys James coming on for the injured James Dowle.

The fresh legs took the game back into the Penallta half and again solid defence frustrated the homeside.Another infringement saw Biddy landing the penalty from 30metres.

With minutes remaining Penallta were frantically trying to get back in the game. The no 10 Gant put in a chip over the top for the impressive wing Edwards to gather and touch down wide out,the conversion failed.

The visitors held out for the last couple of minutes for a well deserved victory.

The performance was superb with the side being led by example from Rhys Meredith and Joe Carlin.Defence was immense, penalty count low and every player was on top of their game.

Merry Christmas everyone and same again please against Ynysybwl on the 30th.December.

The Athletic also played at Penallta but went down 55pts.-0.

The Youth progressed to the next round of the cup with a 17pts.-11 win against Pentyrch.
