Ynysybwl 28 - Risca 18

Match report by Clive James:

Risca travelled to Ynysybwl looking to replicate the second half performance they put in against Penallta last week but came away with nothing as the home team gained maximum points to ensure Division 1 status.

There was only one change from last weeks team as Matthew Bradbury came in for Jake Porter who pulled out ill.

It took the Bwl only four minutes to get the first score when after a handling error on the 10yd.line by Risca saw the no.8 gather the loose ball and drive through the defense before linking with his backline quick hands saw the wing go over wide out for the first try which was converted by the full back.

On ten minutes Risca reduced the arrears when Biddy put over a penalty after the Bwl were caught offside.

For the next quarter of an hour the visitors were getting back into the game with some strong scrummaging but silly errors resulted in them conceding a second try when the home full back finished off a move going over in the corner and then converting from the touchline.Another penalty from Biddy was put over after a scrum infringement but again back came the Bwl  and on thirty five minutes they got their third converted try after a period of sustained pressure and poor tackling from Risca.

Right on forty minutes Risca got their first try when 2nd.row Geraint Roberts went over after a series of pick and drives from inside the 22.

Half time 11pts.-21.

The early period of the second half saw the Bwl going down to fourteen men when the no.4 was binned. With a number of scrums under the homesides posts having to be reset and a warning being issued it didn't take long for Risca to get the second try.No.8 Owen Coomer picked up from the back made ground and Captain Rhys Meredith was in support to force his way over wide out.

But it was the Bwl who controlled things for the remainder of the game with aggressive play and good handling amongst forwards and backs. It came as no surprise when they got the bonus point try again converted by the full back.

Full Time 18 pts.-28.

A disappointing result for the supporters who had travelled expecting a better outcome.Risca were bullied and allowed the impressive Bwl no.8 and centre too much room to set up attacks and keep the Risca team on the back foot for long periods.

Inconsistant can be the word used as to how Risca have performed this season with only November and March seeing them win consecutive games.

Wednesday evening will see the last league game of the season against Nelson at the Stores Field kick off 7pm.

May 7th.the Ben Francis Cup semi final will take place at Blackwood against Ynysddu kick off 7.15pm.
