Dowlais 24 - Risca 3

Match report by Clive James:

During the week leading up to the crucial game away to Dowlais Risca were dealt a severe setback when Rhys Meredith, who has been the sides talisman transfered to near neighbours Crosskeys.

Many supporters made the journey up to Dowlais hoping to see a first victory of the season but unfortunately it never materialised as Risca once again pressed the self destruct button sending everyone back home knowing that next season, unless a miracle happens,we will be dropping out of Division 1.
The conditions during the whole of the afternoon were dreadful with driving rain and wind making the way the  game was going to be played obvious.Risca had won the toss and chose to play with the wind in the first period.
The visitors forwards kept the ball for long periods and play was constantly in the Dowlais half.Stubborn defence and dropped passes at crucial times by Risca with scoring opportunities begging saw the score remain scoreless. With ten minutes of the first period remaining Dowlais were penalised on their 22 and unlike early in the half when a penalty was not taken from the same position Ben Pesci put over the kick. The whistle went for half time with everyone realising 3pts was not going to be enough as the Dowlais no.10 would be pinning the visitors deep in their half with his siege gun kicks.
Half time 3pts.-0 Dowlais.
As in previous games Risca conceded early in the second period when firstly Ben Pesci put in a mis-directed kick which was fielded and the counter attack ended up with Dowlais scoring under the posts with James adding the conversion. Then another kick into the Risca 22 was picked up by Elliot Haines who also put in a dreadful kick which was gratefully gathered by the Dowlais wing who ran in their second try.
Risca then got back into the game but when getting a foothold in the Dowlais half on a number of occasions they squandered possession giving the ball back to the homeside who took full advantage by adding two more tries to ease their relegation worries.
Full time Risca 3pts.-24pts.Dowlais
The Risca pack particularly in the first half worked extremely hard for no reward despite their efforts with Louis Tovey,Geraint Roberts,Alex Sully and Callum Coughlin to the fore while Dan Webb again was superb at scrum time before being forced off with a leg injury in the second half.
The team now has to regroup and stick together for the remainder of the season and look to get some wins on the board starting with next Saturdays visit of Bedlinog.
While disappointed everyone wishes Rhys Meredith all the best as he steps up to Championship rugby. We will be following his progress.
