Risca 12 - Newbridge 29

Match report by Clive James:

Risca gave debuts to three of the Youth team squad, one off the bench, while two others were on the bench in the home game against table toppers Newbridge. Those youth players were 2nd.row Matthew Jones, wing Ethan Williams and full back Brad Meredith who came on in the second half.Biddy was at outside half for the unavailable Ben Pesci,Miles Anderson came back in at centre and Sam Tyrell was a late inclusion after Nathan Darby dropped out.

In front of the biggest crowd of the season Risca took the game straight to the visitors and took the lead within five minutes when Miles Anderson scored wide out after some superb approach work with the forwards securing the ball and putting Newbridge on the backfoot then the backs finishing off for a fine unconverted score.

The early reversal stung the visitors into action and after a driving maul from a lineout no.8 Preece went over near the posts for a converted try.Five minutes later they extended the lead when the ball was ripped away at a lineout and a try was scored in the corner.

The homeside were not going to buckle and after another period of sustained pressure they took play right up to the goalline. The Newbridge defence was eventually breached when Captain Joe Carlin forced his way over with Biddy adding the extras.

With the first half approaching Risca again had Newbridge defending on their 22metre line but no.7 Luke Morgan ripped the ball away from the Risca player and after a 40metre run up field found support on his inside and they were over for their third try which was converted by full back Eainonn Rees. The bonus point fourth try came minutes later when the referee decided it was halftime.

The second half saw Risca frustrating the visitors with Biddy controlling things from no.10 while his half back partner Rhys Meredith was constantly probing keeping the Newbridge defence guessing.Centres Ryan Dallimore and Miles Anderson also showed up with strong runs and defence. The pack while often being shunted back at scrum time competed all afternoon and Youth player Matthew Jones deserves special mention on his contribution in a tough baptism. The young man has a bright future.

The only score of the second half came with Risca right on the goalline looking to gain a bonus point score only to see the ball turned over and after superb handling a length of the field try was scored in the corner.

Full time Risca 12pts.-29pts.Newbridge

While many of the Risca players put in good performances it was prop Sam Tyrell who got Man of the Match.

Next Saturday Risca travel to Nelson k.o.2.30.
