Brynmawr 36 - Risca 22

Match report by Clive James:

Risca had Brandon Kent making his debut in the centre while Dan Webb and Ben Murphy replaced the unavailable Louis Tovey and James Dowle for the visit to top of the table Brynmawr.

The first fifteen minutes saw the visitors putting the pressure on, but it was Brynmawr who went into a ten point lead when after a chip through the home wing gathered and crossed in the corner for a converted try. This was then followed by a penalty goal when Risca were pinged at the breakdown. On the half hour mark, Brynmawr got their second try to go into a 15pt.lead.

Risca then got back into the game when full back Murphy put in a long touch finder to the homesides corner flag. From the lineout the ball was moved in field and from the driving maul Rhys Meredith found centre Kent who forced his way over for a try, which was converted by Murphy. Murphy then put over a penalty and half time arrived with the visitors getting within one score.

Half time 10pts.- 15.

The second half started with Brynmawr exerting a lot of pressure at the set piece and when a strike against the head was won the ball was moved quickly into the midfield where the centre went over under the posts for a converted score.Risca then countered and after gaining a foothold in the homesides 22 the ball was moved to Kent who ran strongly for his second try.Murphy added the extras.

Unfortunately after getting back within one score an error saw the Brynmawr centre latch onto the ball and race away to score under the posts for a converted try. More salt was rubbed in the wounds when some slick play saw the homeside add a fifth try.

Risca were not finished and centre Tetley got over in the corner right on time for an unconverted score.

Full time 22pts.- 36.

Mistakes and game management gave Brynmawr this win. Geraint Rowlands carried well, Brandon Kent was strong in midfield but my Man of the Match was no.8 Mike Preece who was abrasive throughout the game.

The Youth showed their improvement when they drew 12pts.each against Whiteheads.

The Athletic game was abandoned due to a serious injury to a Cardiff Saracens player.

Next saturday Cwmbran are the visitors.
