Penallta 46 - Risca 19

Match report by Clive James:

After the dreadful weather which seemed never ending Risca finally took to the field at Penallta who were using the 4G pitch to ensure the game went ahead.

Ben Simmonds came in at full back with Elliot Haines reverting to his favoured wing position,Curtis Ayling partnered Miles Anderson in the centre and Ryan Anderson was at tighthead.

Within the first five minutes Risca recieved a double whammy when the home no.6 intercepted a pass on the halfway line and ran in the first try which was converted by wing Pritchard. Before play could resume Miles Anderson had to leave the field with a knee injury and the re-shuffle meant Dylan Musto coming onto the wing,Elliot Haines moving to full back and Ben Simmonds going into the centre.

Things didn't get any better when on ten minutes Risca were penalised on their 22metre line and Pritchard put over the simple kick.

It took the visitors twenty minutes to gain a foothold in the Penallta 22 and strong forward play was rewarded when the ball was moved to Elliot Haines who had little room to move in but forced his way over in the corner for an unconverted try.

With halftime approaching and Risca disrupting Penallta at the setpiece the travelling supporters were hopeful that with the strong wind at their backs they could get back in the game. But a mad ten minute period saw the homeside score three tries, one converted to take the game away from Risca.

The second half started without Curtis Ayling who injured his shoulder Youth player Brad Parker came onto the wing and Ryan Dallimore moving to centre.Seventeen minutes into the second period Penallta added two further tries in quick succession to make the score 39pts.-5.

Callum Anderson came on in the 2nd.row in place of Dean Whatley and with his added bulk Risca continued to dominate at the scrum. Two tries were scored by no.8 Callum Coughlin who forced his way over after a lineout on the Penallta line and Captain Joe Carlin went over after latching onto a loose ball and going over under the posts for Ben Pesci to add the extras.

The fourth try which would have given Risca a deserved point eluded them for the remainder of the half and it was the home team who got a seventh try to run out 46pts.-19 winners.

With the injuries to Miles Anderson and Curtis Ayling credit must go to the players for not throwing in the towel and striving to the final whistle to get that fourth try.

The Risca pack together with replacements Sion Rees and Callum Anderson all worked hard throughout the afternoon but my Man of the Match was prop Geraint Rowlands who gave his opposite number a torrid time as well as making numerous carries.

The next two League games are both against Brecon on Wednesday 18th March.away Kick off 7.30.

Then Home 21st.March 2.30.
