Risca 48 - Penallta 14

Match report by Clive James:

Risca were looking to make amends for the heavy defeat suffered at the hands of League leaders Brecon a fortnight ago when they entertained Penallta at the Stores Field. Penallta themselves were smarting after losing to bottom side Hartridge last week and although missing some of their front line players a tough game was expected.

Ben Murphy moved to centre with Owain Biddiscombe back at no.10, Rhys Bowen on permit from Blaenavon came into the 2nd.row,Callum Coughlin and Jake Porter were blindside and openside flankers and they were joined in the backrow by Owen Coomer, normally a centre, making his debut at no.8.

In perfect conditions the game got underway and it was the visitors who were on the front foot straight away as they gained a foothold inside the Risca 22.

From a defensive scrum Captain Rhys Meredith broke down the blindside and the support players took play to Penallta's goalline. From the resultant scrum the ball was moved quickly across the backline to wing Taylor Dimmick who when checked passed inside to the supporting Ben Pesci who went over for an unconverted try.

Penallta responded with a quality try of their own when the no.10 chipped over the defense, gathered and reversed passed to his centre who ran in from 30metres.The no.10 added the extras. The lead was shortlived when the visitors were penalised at the breakdown and Ben Murphy put over the kick. That was his last action of the game as he left the field with a shoulder injury to be replaced by Brandon Kent.

The remainder of the first half saw Risca squander several scoring opportunities that would have put them into a strong position but it was Penallta who went into halftime with the lead when on thirty eight minutes they got their second converted try.

Half Time 8-14pts.

What ever coach Matt Penny said at the interval to the Risca players worked because the second half was completely dominated by the homeside. Six more tries were scored through centres Adam Tetley and Brandon Kent, scrum half Rhys Meredith, wing Rhoss Jeremiah and a brace from right wing Ryan Dallimore,Biddy collected 10points with the boot.Final score 48pts.-14.

The tempo and commitment throughout the second period never let up and Penallta could not cope. Captain Rhys Meredith led from the front and had one of his best games this season, centre Adam Tetley and wing Ryan Dallimore caused all sorts of problems with their pace and strength, Owen Coomer has found his new position while from the bench Adam Jones,Matthew Bradbury and the returning Nathan Darby gave 100% when they came on.

This was a welcome 5 league points to relieve the pressure of dropping into the relegation zone. With two games remaining at Ynysybwl next week and Nelson at home on May 1st.a repeat of the performance seen today will ensure Division 1 status again next season.

Tetley and Ryan Dallimore were joint Men of the Match.

Last Wednesday Youth players Bradley Parker,Lewis Veater,Olly Lewis and Rhys Watson made their senior debuts against Newport Saracens in the District Cup semi -final.
