Caerleon 0 - Risca 8

Match report by Clive James:

Daniel Matthew  and Henry Palmer were included on permit from Newport while James Wadelin came in on the wing for the injured Ben Pesci for the fixture against  Caerleon who were looking to build on last weeks win against near rivals Croesyceiliog.

The conditions were atrocious as the game got underway but it was Risca who adapted quickly to them, as after an opening period of pressure from the homeside it was one way traffic as Caerleon were made to defend for long periods with Risca dominent at the set piece with on loan Dan Matthews proving that a tight head prop gives a platform to the backs that will give opposition problems.

After 15 minutes a penalty from James Dowle opened the scoring and after sustained pressure on 30minutes the lead was extended when James Sully touched down for an unconverted try. Continued pressure for the remainder of the half didn't see any further scores and with Risca playing with the wind in the second period extending the lead was looking likely.

Caerleon had other ideas and they started the second period with more intent and put the visitors on the backfoot for the opening 10 minutes of the half.Risca with held the onslaught and came back into the game. Numerous errors from Caerleon allowed Risca to keep the pressure on and extending the lead further was thwarted by holding onto the ball too long in contact. Caerleon were not able to break down the Risca defence which was superb and no matter what they tried they could not find a way through.

Biddy at no.10 controlled proceedings with his tactical kicking and his half back partner Rhys Meredith kept the home defence guessing at his next move.A solid front three and both second rows performing well allowed the back row to dominate at the break down area frustrating Caerleon the whole afternoon.

Injuries to Adam Tetley,Louis Tovey and Dan Matthews were the only thing to tarnish a good afternoon for Risca.

The next 1st.XV fixture is Abertillery/Blaenau Gwent on Nov. 4th.at the Stores Field.
