Risca 14. Penallta 27

Match report by Clive James.

The new season began as it ended last April with Risca playing Penallta. The Cuckoo's gave debuts to 2nd.row Dan Horler and on the bench back row forward Rhys Norville with prop Gary Carpenter on permit from Crosskeys.A number of the squad were not available for various reasons so captain Rhys Meredith started in the centre and youth products Adam Jones and Callum Redman came in at prop and flanker.
In front of a large crowd and perfect weather conditions the opening quarter saw both sides probing for the opening score and it came from the visitors after some sustained pressure which saw them going over for an unconverted from a driving lineout. They extended their lead on twenty five minutes with a penalty goal after ill discipline. For the remainder of the half the homeside threatened to open their account with some good passages of play from forwards and backs but half time came with the score remaining  0-8pts.to Penallta.
The 2nd.half started with Gary Carpenter replacing Adam Jones in the front row.Within a minute of the restart the Penallta no.10 capitalised on a Risca mistake and kicked through for the wing to follow up and score a converted try. This reversal stung the homeside and they responded with captain Rhys Meredith charging through the visiting defence and when he was held up short of the line the ball was moved quickly to centre Adam Tetley who went over under the posts for a converted try.Within minutes a lack of concentration from Risca saw Penallta extend the lead with another converted try.Again Risca came back with another well worked try from prop Gary Carpenter after good work from 2nd.row Dan Horler,Dowle added the extra's.With the game going into the last quarter Match report by Clive James
another mistake from the homeside gave Penallta the bonus point try and as much as the homeside tried to reduce the defecit in the final minutes the visitors held out for a 14-27pts.victory.
Difficult games will come thick and fast each week in this division but the positives taken from today's game will i'm sure see the team building on last years good finish.
Stand out performances today came from Liam Thomas,Adam Tetley,Rhys Meredith,Callum Coughlin and my Man of the Match Ben Pesci.
The Athletic played a strong Bargoed side in the new Conference league and acquitted themselves very well going down 41pts.-23.Bargoed scoring two late converted tries in the last five minutes.
The Youth beat Croesyceiliog in a friendly 22pts.-5.
Next saturday 1st.XV travel to Ynysybwl.
