Senghenydd 3 - Risca 15

Match report by Clive James.

Scott Turners 10pts.on his return to the Risca team after a lengthy layoff brightened up an otherwise dour encounter away to Senghenydd in the last league fixture before Christmas. Ryan Crandon and Alexander Hawkins came into the second row while Mark Chamberlain Baker made his first appearance of the season at prop. Half backs Turner and captain Rhys Meredith were on the bench after being out with injuries.

From the kick off Risca dominated and should have been at least three scores up within the first twenty minutes only for the opportunities to be wasted by dropped passes and wrong options being taken. All that came was an unconverted try from flanker Allyn Evans on sixteen minutes. The remainder of the half saw more chances missed while the homeside reduced the defecit with a penalty goal.

Half time 5pts.-3.

The second half got underway with the travelling supporters hoping for an improved performance from their team but they had to wait until the 70th.minute for the next score to come. Up until then the game became a poor example of Division 1 rugby with both sides making countless errors. So it was up to Turner to secure the win with a penalty goal and a conversion of his own try.

Man of the Match in this drab affair was flanker Allyn Evans.

This was a clean sweep weekend with the Athletic and Youth winning at Machen and Bedwas.

Merry Christmas to everyone and Happy New Year.
