Penallta 27 - Risca 19

Match report by Clive James;

Risca's interest in this seasons Plate competition ended at the first hurdle when they were beaten 27pts.-19 at holders Penallta.

Liam Thomas and Matthew Mcgovern returned at wing and centre while Owain Cooper started at hooker.Ryan Dallimore joined captain Rhys Meredith in making 100 appearances for the 1st.XV.

Playing on the 4G surface in front of a large crowd the game got underway. It was Penallta who took the lead in a five minute spell that saw them go 12pts.up.

Their first try came when an overthrow at a lineout on the halfway was pounced on by Penallta and after brushing away defenders the final pass was taken by wing Ryan Davies who touched down in the corner.Straight from the kick off flanker Corey Tucker fielded the ball on his 10yard line and was allowed the freedom of the park as he side stepped numerous half hearted tackles to go over under the posts for a converted try.

Risca then steadied the ship and while they were defending for long periodsit was against the run of play that they got on the score board.

The Penallta left wing was not able to take a pass on the halfway line and with three Risca defenders on him the ball was kicked through.Outside half Lewis Millard gathered the kind bounce and dived over in the corner and then added the conversion from the touchline.

The remainder of the first period became a scrappy affair and the score remained 12pts.-7.

The second half started with Kiaran Lewis replacing no.8 Todd James who left the field with an ankle injury.Callum Anderson had earlier replaced prop Adam Jones who sustained a shoulder injury.

The home side again got an early score when that man Corey Tucker took a Risca throw in at a lineout on the halfway line and ran in for his second try.

A penalty from no15.Pritchard extended the lead to 20pts.-7.

Risca made a number of changes when Biddy replaced Lewis Millard,Louis Tovey came on for "Doc" Cooper, who had put in a good shift and James Sully made his first appearance of the season coming on at no.8 with Lewis moving into the 2nd.row.

The added bulk and ball carrying of Anderson,Kiaran Lewis and Tovey was putting the homeside under pressure but when a pass was spilled the strong running wing Moseley snapped up the loose ball, made ground into the Risca 22 before handing an inside pass to the supporting centre who touched down under the posts for a converted try.

The remainder of the half belonged to the visitors and they were rewarded with tries from Sully and a bulldozing effort from Anderson.

But the comeback came too late and Penallta progressed to the second round.

The first half cost Risca this game. They were lethargic and all at sea with poor decision making as well as being woeful in defence. The game is played over 80minutes and concentration levels must be high straight from the the first whistle.

Hopefully the team can get their mojo back for the visit of Brecon next week.

Joe Carlin put in another superb performance but my Man of the Match in the time he was on the field was Kiaran Lewis.

The Athletic lost 28pts.-32 to New Tredegar.

The Youth beat Cwmbran 17pts.-7.
