Risca 34 - Brecon 17

Match report by Clive James

Brecon were the visitors to the Stores Field looking to continue their winning ways after consecutive wins in the last few weeks.Risca reverted to their normal backline with Biddy coming back at no.10 while Nathan Williams on permit from Crosskeys was among the replacements.  Allyn Evans came back into the back row with Tim Barnes continuing in the 2nd.row.

Brecon raced into a 14pts,-0 lead within the first 20minutes after sloppy play saw left wing Jake Crockett cross for two tries both converted. After this early set back the cuckoos got back into the game and by halftime had reduced the defecit to 2points after full back James Dowle had landed four penalty goals.  Wing Whitehead left the field after a knee injury which required ten stitches, to be replaced by Williams.

At half time the Risca side must have had a good talking to from the coaches because the second half  saw the home sides' pack take complete control in the loose and set piece and starve the Brecon backs any quality ball.  The back row were dominant at the breakdown with Allyn Evans to the fore while at the set scrums Brecon had no answer to the pressure being constantly exerted. The visitors only added a penalty to their first half score while Risca rattled up 22pts. through a rare try from Biddy and five more penalties and a conversion from Dowle. The 34pts.-17 win pushed the Cuckoos up to sixth in the league.

The 29pts.from James Dowle was leaving the supporters asking was this the most points scored by an individual in Risca's history? The performance was much improved on last weeks and with a settled squad getting to know their jobs hopefully it will continue. Man of the Match this week was difficult to pick after anyone in the pack were in contention but prop Geraint Rowlands edged it with a good allround display.

Next week Risca visit Nantyglo.
