Risca v Fleur Ben Francis Cup report

Match report by Clive James

Risca with a break from the league made a number of changes for the game against Fleur- Dy-Lys. Sam Tyrrell made his debut alongside Geraint Roberts in the 2nd.row while Ieuan Davies came in to what was for him the unaccustomed position of tight head prop. Alexander Hawkins was at blindside while behind the scrum James Meredith was at no.10 and James Wadelin started on the left wing.

The opening period of the first half belonged to the visitors who were dominating at the set piece and setting up their mid field who were creating problems with some strong incisive runs. But it was on the twenty minute mark that Fleur infringed some 30 metres out and up stepped full back James Dowle to take the kick. The attempt went wide so halting his run of sixteen successful goals. Further failed penalty attempts from both sides saw the game remain a stalemate until on the half hour mark Fleur took the lead when their strong running centre shrugged off some weak tackling to score a converted try.Within two minutes Risca were level when after a strong run from Corey Nicholls the ball was moved quickly through the hands for wing Wadelin to cross, Dowle added the extras.

HALF TIME 7pts-7pts.

Within 2 minutes of the restart Fleur infringed again and this time Dowle found the posts to put Risca back in front. 15minutes later it was all square again when the visitors no.10 put over his penalty attempt. The remainder of the half saw more penalties missed by both kickers and Risca giving away possession with a combination of missed passes, players getting isolated and wrong options being taken.

With difficult league games coming up hopefully the players can correct the problems that seem to be happening regularly. The coaches can say what they want but it's the players who cross the whitewash and are then responsible once the game starts.

Good performances came from Geraint Roberts and Alexander Hawkins but it was Corey Nicholls who was Man of the Match with his strong running and awesome tackling which stopped Fleur players in their tracks.

Next home game is v Penallta November 12th.
