Blaenavon 10 - Risca 3

Match report by Clive James.

After a month of inactivity due to postponements and the 6Nations Risca finally got the league programme back underway when they travelled to Blaenavon.A bonus point was secured in the last fifteen minutes of the game when Scott Turner landed a 30metre penalty in a game that had been dominated by the atrocious conditions.

The first score didn't come until the 35th.minute when the home no.10 put over a penalty from 30 metres out. Up until then the action was taking place between each sides 22metre area with ball being spilled and numerous turnovers taking place due to the poor conditions.

The second half started much the same way as the first had been until the last twenty minutes when Risca lost a lineout and ended up defending their line for long periods.Blaenavon had numerous lineouts and scrums but Risca's defence held firm until the referee gave the home side a big advantage by moving a scrum 20 metres in field from the original position and this resulted in the homeside scrambling over for the winning score with a converted try making it 10pts.-3.

Credit goes to both teams for trying to make a game of it due to the dreadful conditions.

For Risca Gareth Smith again led from the front and was backed up by all his fellow forwards who worked hard throughout a difficult afternoon.
