Risca Progess To Next Round

Risca 23 - 18 Wattstown

Risca Youth welcomed Wattstown Youth to the Stores Field for the first round of the Welsh Youth Cup aiming to go one step further than last season and make it into the second round of the draw.

Risca's pack started with early dominance taking two early scrum balls from the "town" which gave them good field position. But it would be the visitors who were to strike first through a penalty from around 30m to take an early 0-3 lead. This lead wasn’t to last long as from the kick off an infringement in kickable range gifted Lewis Millard an opportunity to bring his side level, which he did with relative ease. 3-3. With both teams striving to play a fast and open game it was evident that the Risca backs always seemed to have the edge over their opponents out wide and it wouldn’t be long until this was shown. After good work up front and some good phase ball being kept alive, the young cuckoo's were able to send the ball along the line where full back David Griffiths was able to dissect the defense to score out wide. The conversion failed and Risca now took lead 8-3. Wattstown tried to get a foothold in the game after being on the back foot for so long and a speculative kick and good pressure saw the ball spilled and a player pick up in front of the man giving them a chance to cut the lead down. The reliable boot of their outside half saw this mistake punished and Risca's lead was cut to 8-6. From the kick off, good play from Captain Marcus Trevett saw the ball retained and a barnstorming run provided problems for the visitors who infringed once again. Referee had a word with the captain and awarded Risca the penalty around about 30 meters out. Millard once again cut the posts in two and Risca led 11-6 at half time.

The second half kicked off and both sides tried to show glimpses of real effort but the final ball often failing for both teams. But it would be Risca who got the first score of the half. Excellent hands saw the pass given to speedster Morgan Coomer who danced around 3 would be tacklers before going over in the corner. The 'Town' complained for crossing but the referee stuck with his decision and it was awarded. The kick after failed just drifting to the side of the up rights. Risca now opened up a 10 point gap leading 16-6. This seemed to galvanize Wattstown and they came back stronger at the Risca line. A few glimpses of indiscipline saw Risca pinned back by the boot of the outside half. After a good rolling maul falling just short, the blindside flanker picked and went and scored in the corner near the flag. The kick was missed after good pressure from winger Arnus Auksakis. 16-11. Wattstown then saw a yellow card for their winger for dangerous play, which left them with 14 men for the next 10 minutes. In the seesaw game that we had the next score could only go one way - the Risca way. Good interplay between backs and forwards saw Second Row Harvey Reader using every inch of his arm span to reach and place the ball on the line to stretch the lead once again. Millard's kicking boots returned and the kick was successful. Risca now pushed their lead to 23-11. Wattstown then returned to 15 players only to see their loose head prop go off injured leaving them to go back to 14 and the scrums to go passive. This seemed to benefit Wattstown rather than Risca. With a scrum around 35 meters out, a pop from scrum half to his half back partner saw a clever chip over the Risca defence and their inside centre read the bounce of the ball best and he collected to stroll under the posts. Kick successful and the game was getting closer, 23-18. Risca tried will all their might to get another score to kill off the game, several players being held up, Emilio Dos Santos and Brady Reynolds to name a few. With less than a minute on the clock Risca threw the kitchen sink at the Town but an unlucky knock on over the line saw the referee blow up for full time. Risca had done enough to beat a very good Wattstown team.

Risca will progress through to the second round, Where they will face Garndiffaith away. All players should give themselves a pat on the back for the bravery and determination show to get the result. Risca play Abergavenny next saturday.
