Brecon 19 - Risca 0

Match report by Clive James

The six travelling supporters who braved the elements at Brecon saw the table toppers continue their unbeaten run while seeing their team push the homeside right up to the final whistle.

Changes from last week saw captain Rhys Meredith moving to inside centre and Evan Ash taking over at scrum half. Ieuan Davies came in at loosehead for the unavailable Geraint Rowlands and Owen Coomer filled the right wing position.

Risca won the toss and kicked off into a strong wind. Within three minutes Brecon were on the scoreboard when left wing Price finished off with a try in the corner after quick handling, outside half Gunter put over the conversion from the touchline.

Then on eleven minutes the homeside were gifted a second score. After winning the lineout the ball moved to Biddy on his 22.He put a high diagonal kick towards wing Coomer but it fell into the grateful hands of left wing Price who ran in from thirty metres for his second try.The conversion failed.

The remainder of the half was played out between both 22's with Brecon not able to add to the scoreline and the visitors limiited attacks being stifled by the strong defense.

Half time 0-12pts.

The second half started with the wind subsiding taking away the advantage it would have given.Risca were then having to reshuffle the backline when Biddy left the field with a calf injury.Adam Tetley moved to no.10,Taylor Dimmick moved to centre while Broughton and Taylor Barnes filled the wing positions.

The pattern of the game continued as the first half had ended with both sides defending strongly while the Risca set piece was putting the home eight under pressure.Brecon had to withstand a period of Risca phases which took play into the 22 but the tryline eluded them and the danger was cleared.

On seventy five minutes with Risca in possession a crunching tackle in midfield saw the ball being spilled. It was quickly gathered and passed to the right wing who came in at pace eluding numerous would be tacklers before touching down under the posts for a converted try.

The game finished with Risca still trying to breakdown the stubborn home defense but coming away with nothing. That was the first time they have failed to score this season.

Final score 0-19pts.

Another game where silly mistakes and missed tackles cost Risca. The pack again put in a superb performance with each one of them putting in a hard shift.

Next Saturday Nelson are the visitors kick off 2.30.

Congratulations to the youth who got their first win of the season when they beat Croesycieliog 10pts,-7 at the Stores Field.
