Blaenavon 16 - Risca 17

Owain Biddescombe led out the Risca team on his 150th.appearance followed by Joe Carlin making his 50th.appearance at Blaenavon in the league fixture.  The only changes from last weeks emphatic victory against Abertillery/BlaenauGwent was in the front row with Adam Jones switching to tight head and Geraint Rowlands returning after injury to the loose head.

As like last week Risca got on the scoreboard within two minutes of the kick off. After an aggressive charge up the right hand touchline into the 22metre by Louis Tovey the ball was taken up by props Rowlands and Jones before moving out to Biddy whose flat pass was taken by centre Rhys James and he cut through at pace to touch down for an unconverted try.

The home team hit back five minutes later when a good line break from outside half Pearce created a three on one situation for full back Davies to go over in the corner to level the score.

After Pearce landed a penalty Risca got their second try on 25minutes when Biddy was again the provider with a beautiful timed pass to captain Rhys Meredith who muscled his way over near the posts for full back Millard to add the extras.

Another superb try followed when Millard fielded a high ball and moved it quickly to Dallimore who in turn passed to Whitehead. He turned on the afterburners and when he was halted he fed to Rhys James who ran on for his second try.

Pearce landed another penalty and an entertaining first half came to an end.

Half Time 11pts.-17pts.

Blaenavon made changes up front after the visitors had got the upper hand at the end of the first period and it had an immediate effect. From the kick off they put Risca on the back foot and from a lineout they set up a driving maul resulting in 2nd.row Duke touching down for an unconverted try to get to within one point.

Over the seasons no game at Blaenavon have ever been easy and this game was proving to be another one of those. The remainder of the half had both teams striving to get the vital score but good defence and errors at crucial times saw the game finish 17pts-11 in Risca's favour.  This was a type of game that last season Risca would have lost but this time the players have found a combined belief in each other.

Ryan Dallimore and Wayne Whitehead were again dangerous with ball in hand, while Rhys James has made an immediate impact on his return to the club.  But my Men of the Match has to be the props Adam Jones and Geraint Rowlands who as well as carrying were superb at the set scrums.
