CUCKOOS GROUNDED BY BRECON HEAT

Match report by John Hayes:

Everyone who turned up at the Stores Field to watch Risca take on a Brecon team top of the division and finalists in the WRU Plate after beating Penallta, knew the enormity of the task Risca faced. With a creditable 0- 19 away defeat earlier in the season, Risca supporters were hoping for a tight tussle.

In the 3rd minute a penalty to Risca on Brecon’s 22 was slotted over by Ben Murphy. However, this was as tight as the score line was hoped for as on 4 minutes Brecon threw the ball out wide and a combination of forwards and three quarters passing at speed ran in their first try.

Further Brecon tries followed in similar fashion in the 9th and 17th minutes. Risca showed that they could play too and for 20 minutes good movement and support work had Brecon on the back foot. Unfortunately, a few dropped passes meant the only progress point wise was by Murphy with a 35th minute penalty,

6 – 21.

In the 39th minute Risca running out from their 22, with men to spare, dropped a pass, the resulting bounce was kind to Brecon right into their hands and their 4th try was scored.

Half time Risca 6 Brecon 28

For the first ten minutes of the second half, Risca took the game to Brecon through much good forward play and last-ditch three quarter tackles. An attacking Brecon scrum inside Risca’s 22 was won by Risca’s snap shove and kicked clear. From a Risca scrum in Brecon’s 22, the Risca forwards’ pick up and drives resulted in a pass to Murphy who gleefully crossed and converted after 51 minutes. 13 – 28.

This stung Brecon into action. Brecon’s speed of play was emphasised by their slight of hand in the tackle and knowledge whichever way they looked there was instant support. Tries were scored in the 55th and 61stminutes before Risca’s Callum Coughlin finished off a quality forward attack in the 70th minute.18 – 38.

Brecon now showed why they are heading for a possible double this season as they played at pace and precision. Their ability to take out two tacklers and offload at the same time was outstanding. Tries in the 70th, 73rd and 77th minutes hoisted the Final score 18 -57.

No one can question Risca players’ effort, this Brecon team is something special and could quite easily compete in next season’s championship.

Next league game 20th April home to Penallta.
