Penallta 39 - Risca 27

Match report by Clive James

Games between Risca and Penallta are never dull and this league season opener was no exception.Ten tries, yellow cards and friendly banter made this a memorable match.

Risca saw prop Jordan Rogers and no.10 Ben Murphy on permit from Ebbw Vale while youth products Morgan Smith and Jack Haycock-Watkins were on the bench. The opening 5minutes saw Penallta exerting pressure which resulted in them going over for the first try which went unconverted. After weathering the early onslaught the visitors got back into the game when full back Dowle landed a 30metre penalty which was cancelled out when Penallta landed a penalty of their own to extend the lead. Then a crazy fifteen minutes followed where Risca were reduced to thirteen with full back Dowle and no.8 Coughlin being yellow carded.During their time off the field 19pts.were conceded,3tries,two of which were converted.

  Half time 3-27pts.

Within minutes of the restart Penallta extended their lead when after some slick handling another try was scored making things looking pretty grim with 35minutes remaining. From the kick off the game then changed and Risca started to impose themselves putting the homeside on the backfoot. Centre Dimmick got the first try when he burst through taking defenders with him over the line and almost immediately was instrumental in the next score when after running out of his 22metre area he chipped a kick downfield into space where Dowle gathered the bouncing ball and running in from the halfway line.A penalty try followed and it was game on at 20pts.-32.

Penallta were not finished and got their sixth try when the impressive scrum half Bidgood gathered and went over under the posts for a converted try.
The remaining ten minutes saw Risca putting the pressure back on the home team and wing Ryan Dallimore ran in from 35metres for the fourth try which gave them a bonus point.Time ran out as the visitors continued to push for the extra bonus point as the final whistle sounded.

Not many sides will come away with anything from Penallta this season and Risca can take many positives from this game moving forward.
With Smith and Haycock-Watkins making their debuts off the bench and with players coming back from injury the progress that has been shown over the last two seasons hopefully will continue.

Final score 27pts.-39pts,

The Athletic went down 15pts.-17 to Cwmbran and the Youth went down to a strong Bridgend side 42pts.-0.
The Youth have come together this season after Dan Bartlett worked hard during the close season to make sure a team took to the field.Time together will see this side improve as a number of talented boys are in the side.

Next week Ynysybwl are the visitors.
