Risca v Nelson match report

Match report by Clive James

Today Risca welcomed Nelson to the Stores Field in a reversal of the fixture due to the on going work at the Park.Vice captain Joe Carlin returned on the flank with Norville moving into the 2nd.row while Dean Brooker on permit from Ebbw Vale started at tight head prop. After last weeks indifferent performance at Ynysybwl this was a vastly improved display with backs and forwards combining to earn a convincing 35pts.-11 victory.Nelson took the lead in the first five minutes when the ball was moved quickly to the wing who touched down for an unconverted try after running through full back Dowle.

After this early set back the remainder of the half belonged to the homeside whose backs were causing Nelson all sorts of problems with Dowle,Pesci and Dallimore constantly carving out openings while centres McGovern and Tetley were a constant threat with their direct running. But for all this possession only one try was scored when Pesci finished off in the corner after a move started from the Risca 10yard line.Nelson then levelled things up with a penalty goal.

Half time 8pts.- 8.

The second half saw both sides swapping penalties to put the score at 11pts.each.But after this Risca then took complete control scoring three more tries. The first of the three came from centre Adam Tetley after he ran strongly from 30metres out to go over under the posts with Dowle adding the conversion. This was the followed by Tovey touching down after a driving maul started on the Nelson 22metre line.Dowle again added the extras.Liam Thomas then replaced the impressive captain Rhys Meredith while Taylor Dimmick came on for Ryan Dallimore. The bonus point try came within minutes of the substitutions. Again quick handling from Biddy and Dowle saw wing Pesci making ground before handing on to the supporting Thomas who ran in from 25metres for Dowle to put over the conversion.Biddy then rounded things off with a penalty goal after the dangerous Dowle had been taken out after following up his lofted kick.

Other than the one missed tackle Risca's defence was superb and the discipline was very good with the penalty count very low.Good performances came from throughout the team with Ryan Anderson, who had replaced Brooker early in the game, having one of his best games and he was supported by the other seven forwards who all put in a good shift. The returning Joe Carlin was my Man of the Match closely followed by Mcgovern. The Athletic went into the 2nd.round of the Bowl with a 28pts.-10 win against Crumlin. The youth lost 15pts.-3 away to Bargoed.

Next week the visitors will be Brynmawr.
