Nelson 19 - Risca 28

Match report by Clive James:

Risca after the win aganist Penallta travelled to Nelson looking to gain the first double of the season. What a game it turned out to be. Rhys James came in for the unavailable Ben Pesci on the wing,  Adam Jones replaced Jordan Rogers at tighthead and Owain Cooper started at hooker while Lewis Millard filled the fullback position. The homeside took the game to Risca from the off with their big pack dominating.  After conceding a penalty, Risca found themselves defending a lineout inside their 22 line. Despite thwarting the constant picking and driving for the next three minutes Nelson eventually took the lead with a converted try when they burrowed over under the posts.

From the kick off Nelson again put Risca under pressure inside the 22 metre area. But when a pass went to ground, wing Ryan Dallimore snapped up the loose ball and ran in from 70 metres to touch down under the posts.  Lewis Millard added  the extras.

Five inutes later the visitors took the lead when another drop pass, this time on the halfway line, was picked up by centre Adam Tetley who touched down under the posts. Millard again converted.  Following a burst up the touchline Captain Rhys Meredith had to leave the field with a wrist injury.  Liam Thomas replaced him at scrum half.

Just before half time Nelson got their second try when the left wing took what looked like a forward pass to touch down wide out, the conversion failed.

The game then exploded when an off the ball incident sparked a free for all between both sets of forwards and an individual confrontation between apposing centres McGovern and Carter. When the referee finally regained control he showed the red card to both centres.

Half time came without further incident 14pts-12pts to Risca.

The second half was only ten minutes old when Nelson regained the lead.  A high kick was not dealt with and the homesides' right wing reacted quickest to the bouncing ball to race away and touch down for a converted try.

From this reversal Risca came back strongly and it was,as aganist Penallta, the players that came off the bench making the impact.

Nelson's nuisance prop had to be replaced and that was the turning point.  Hooker Louis Tovey and backrower Todd James increased the tempo and for the remainder of the game Risca dominated.  The lead was regained when a delightful chip over the defence by Tetley was gathered and from the following play Liam Thomas broke away to touch down wide out. James Dowle put over a superb conversion from the touch line.

From the kick off more good play followed ending with a scrum on Nelson's line. The home 8 could not hold the power coming through and they conceded a penalty try for Risca to claim the bonus point.

Before the game ended more intimidation from Nelson on and off the field saw another unsavoury incident occur. The referee eventually calmed things down and the final whistle saw an evenful afternoon come to a close.

A few seasons ago Risca would have conceded to provocation and intimidation , but this squad are made of sterner stuff.

Again the whole 20 players put in a tremendous preformance to come away with the 5 points.  One player though who was tireless all afternoon and did a lot of the unseen work was Callum Coughlin. He was my Man of the Match.
