Ynysybwl 35 - Risca 29 Match report

Match report by Clive James.

Risca travelled to Ynysybwl for the second league fixture of the season looking to pick up their first points. Matthew McGovern made his debut in the centre while Callum Redman moved into the 2nd,row and captain Rhys Meredith reverted back to scrum half,  with Liam Thomas dropping to the bench.

For any neutral watching they would have been witness to a 64point, 8 try game but for the Risca travelling support and coaching staff this was another frustrating afternoon,The early exchanges saw both sides making handling errors turning possession over and after full back Dowle missed a simple kick in front of the posts it was Ynysybwl who took the lead when the no.15 put over a penalty. Dowle then made amends for his earlier miss by slotting his second attempt. Then on 15minutes the home eight gained the upper hand at the scrum on the halfway line and when the ball was moved to the no.10 McIntosh, he brushed aside the weak attempts at tackling him and ran in for an unconverted try in the corner. On 28minutes Biddy gathered a kick out of defence on the halfway and handed on to McGovern. The centre set off on a strong run into the 22metre area before passing to wing Ryan Dallimore who touched down for a converted try.

Play was then halted as no.8 Todd James had to leave the field with a head injury. Adam Price came onto the flank with Norville moving to no.8. Another penalty put the homeside back in front but this was shortlived when Biddy went over for a converted try after a sniping run from captain Meredith. But in this topsy turvy first half Ynysybwl went into half time leading when no.10 McIntosh got his second try in what was a replica of his first.

Half Time 18pts.-17.

At the start of the 2nd.half Callum Anderson replaced prop Geraint Rowlands who picked up a leg injury just before the end of the first period.Due to this, passive scrums were called.Risca got back in front when from a scrum inside the 22 the ball was moved along the backline and wing Pesci took the pass to go over under the posts for a converted try. Unfortunately after this error after error crept into the visitors play with wayward passing, wrong options, kicks going straight into touch or dead and very poor defence. Ynysybwl took full advantage during this period and with their scrum half causing all sorts of problems, added two more converted tries and a penalty. The last say though went to Risca when captain Rhys Meredith made a darting run to go over for their fourth try and 2 bonus points.

The players who stood out today was McGovern,Rhys Meredith and Callum Coughlin who again gave everything. But Man of the Match has to be Louis Tovey who was out to make up for his performance last week.

The Athletic lost at home to Llanhilleth 33pts.-15.

The youth beat St,Julians 29pts.-10 in their first league fixture.

Next saturday 1XV.travel to Nelson.
