Ben Francis Cup report - Brynmawr v Risca

Match report by Clive James:

Risca's Ben Francis cup match was switched to the Stores Field after Brynmawrs pitch was deemed unplayable. This was the third meeting of the season between the sides with Risca taking the league win and Brynmawr progressing in the plate competition.

The homeside made several changes after last weeks win at Abertillery with the coaches thoughts putting more emphasis on the league than a cup competition that over the seasons has lost it's prestige. Maybe the Mon.Union can address the Ben Francis format for next season.

In this encounter Brynmawr played with more purpose and dominated for long periods particularly at the set scrum and by half time had scored four tries, one being a penalty try to Risca's converted try by no.10 Dowle.

  Half Time 7-26pts.

Within three minutes of the second period Risca infringed on the 22metre line and the visitors extended their lead with a penalty goal. This then signalled a mini revival when Dowle made a break and slipped the ball to flanker Allyn Evans who went over for a try converted by Dowle. Brynmawr hit back after half an hour when they went over for their fifth try with Risca down to fourteen when flanker Evans was yellow carded. The homeside did have the last word when Tom Josham making his debut off the bench ran in a try from 40 metres after being put clear,Dowle added the extras.

Others who made their debuts were Scott Jarvis,Marcus Trevis and Emilio Do Santos.

After last week this was a poor performance. The only shining lights during the afternoon were youth product James Wadelin on the wing, flanker Allyn Evans and no.10.Dowle who caused Brynmawr problems with his strong running, tactical kicking and clever offloads.

The youth lost away to Senghenydd 27pts.- 0.

Next week Ynysybwl are the visitors.
