Caerleon 7 - Risca 28

Match report by Clive James

Risca  were looking to build on last weeks strong display against Rhydfelin when they visited Caerleon looking to gain the double over their near neighbours.

Ross Jeremiah and Callum Anderson came in on the wing and prop respectively for the injured Taylor Dimmick and Mark Chamberlain Baker. Joe Bartlett figured again in the 2nd.row on permit from Ebbw Vale.

The kick off from the visitors did not go 10 metres and from the scrum Caerleon moved into the Risca red zone and exerted pressure for the next five minutes. They could not turn this pressure into points and it was captain Rhys Meredith who moved Risca downfield with a long clearing kick. After ten minutes Caerleon infringed and Biddy opened the scoring with a penalty goal. Then on twenty minutes after strong running from Wayne Whitehead and Adam Tetley, the ball was moved quickly back across field to Ross Jeremiah who got over in the corner. Risca turned the screw even more and kept the homeside on the back foot with Joe Carlin and Allyn Evans prominent. Another penalty from Biddy was followed by a second try from wing Ben Pesci after more quick handling, Biddy added the conversion from the touchline to put Risca 18pts.up. Right on halftime on one of the rare visits into the visitors 22 metre area Caerleon got on the scoreboard when ex-Risca wing Curtis Ayling forced his way over for a converted try.

Half Time 18pts.-7.

The second half saw Risca completely control the game with Caerleon not able to get away from the stranglehold being put on them, with Captain Rhys Meredith leading by example with his strong, aggressive play ably assisted by a strong pack and a back line thriving on the possession being given them.

Further tries came from Callum Anderson and Joe Bartlett to secure the bonus point win.

To a man this was a repeat in effort and committment of last weeks game and so no Man of the Match. The whole team were Men of the Match.

With Senghenydd at home next week and then the re-arranged fixture against Penallta the confidence gained in the last two weeks hopefully will see us finishing the season on a high.

Final score 28pts.-7.
