Risca 15 - Nelson 23

Match report by Clive James.

Nelson moved to the top of the table while Risca dropped one place to 6th.after a game of two halves which saw the visitors gaining a seasons double. Kiaran Lewis made a welcome return to the 2nd.row while Taylor Dimmick came onto the wing and James Sully replaced the injured Allyn Evans on the flank.

Unlike last week the homeside were put under pressure from the start and within the first 8minutes were 10pts.down. Firstly the impressive Nelson no.10 put over a penalty after an infringement then almost immediately put in a telling crosskick which was not dealt with, giving the Nelson no.14 a clear run in for a converted try.Risca reduced the defecit on 15 minutes when full back Dowle put over a penalty. More visitor infringements followed but kicks for goal were ignored which were all within easy range for the reliable Dowle. Nelson then exerted a long period of pressure but superb defence saw only another penalty being added to the scoreline.

On 37minutes after good play from Risca to gain a foothold in the opposition half indecision and a wayward pass saw wing Davies race away for his second try converted by Ellis to put Nelson 20pts.-3 up. From the kick off back came Risca and after a series of phases captain Rhys Meredith got over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Half time 20pts.-8.

Within 4 minutes of the second half another penalty was put over by Ellis to extend the lead even further. That though was the only points Nelson scored in the half as the homeside began to dominate just as the visitors had done in the first half with hooker Tovey,2nd.row Lewis and the back row impressive. Again kicks to goal were ignored and it wasn't until right on time that Risca scored the best try of the game when no.10 Biddy gave a perfectly timed pass to full back Dowle who ran in under the posts from 35metres out. He converted his try and the game was over.

Those squandered penalty kicks during the afternoon saw a bonus point being lost allowing Caerleon to leapfrog Risca in the league. Joe Carlin and Adam Tetley both had very good games but it was scrum half and captain Rhys Meredith, despite his refusal to take the kicks for goal who was Man of the Match.

Next week we travel to Brynmawr for the fourth meeting of the season.
